Field notes 9/20/2025

Date: 9/20/25

Present climate conditions: Dry and sunny (although it did storm quite a bit after I took my notes)

Length of day: 12 hours, 17 minutes

Temperature: 80 degrees Fahrenheit


Changes since last visit: 

- Aphids appeared on witch hazel leaves. 





















- Some plants were trampled or eaten by animals, especially Jack in the pulpits. These plants have berries that are toxic to humans but can be eaten by some birds. See images below:
















You can see some of the damage done by bugs and/or animals on the lower leaf of the plant closest to this text.


- The mushrooms I noticed last visit are now both gone. I wonder what the cause of this is? Animals?


- Silvery glade ferns have started dying. Many are no longer fully bright green, but are turning brown. 












Organisms smelled, felt, heard, or seen, etc: 

- Small animal holes in side of hill near stream

- Worm hiding in leaves near site 1

- Mosquitos flying and landing on me

- Aphids on witch hazel (see above)

- Ants crawling on tree trunk (images below).


- Hairy poop mold (images below) was near site one within a few feet of the creek's edge in damp ground. This type of pin mold in known to grow on animal feces.

    Good work overall. Good work putting together your pictures with the descriptions in a way that helps us better understand. Do you know the life cycle of mushrooms? If you find another, include pictures of it and walk us through the life cycle for bonus (just put in your next post).

Field notes 10/9/2025

  Date: 10/9/25 Time of day: 5:00-5:30 PM Present climate conditions: Dry and sunny Length of day: 11 hours, 21 minutes Temperature: 62 degrees Fahrenheit Map (corresponds to  data table , now updated through data set #3): Changes since last visit: - No Jack in the pulpit plants near location nine (see the map above) - More pin mold/hairy poop mold (below), this time farther up the river, closer to sites 4 and 5. Previous mold was closer to sites 1 and 2.  Animal feces are clearly visible below the mold in some of these pictures. It also appears that this mold grows on different types of animal feces as the feces in the top few images are different shapes compared to the feces in the bottom few images.  - Creek now clogged with leaf litter in some areas (more than before) - Leaves changing color (poison Ivy, hazelnut tree) The two above are Hazelnut, the two below are Poison Ivy.  - Some ferns died, especially those farther than three feet from the water's edge ...

Field study part 2

EDD:  Experimental Design Diagram Here is the map with locations labeled (these correspond to the data table ). I will refer to these locations in the explanations of some of my pictures.  Sound map: - Sounds that continued for the full time I was out there are marked "Continuous."  - If I heard noises multiple times, I wrote the noise where I heard it. For example, the word "Squirrel" is marked a few times in the same area because the squirrel moved a few feet.  - Arrows indicate that the source of the noise is off the page.
